A strong hero prop should prove more than the final render. It should show deliberate shape language, clean material separation, organised UVs, flexible surface controls and behaviour that still works once the asset reaches the engine.
Blender to Unreal Engine 5: Stylized Interactive Pirate Chest is a 44-lesson, 7.5-hour project course by Luke from 3D Tudor. You will build the chest from scratch in Blender 5.2, prepare UVs and generated masks, create procedural materials in Unreal Engine 5.8, and turn the finished asset into an animated interactive Blueprint.
The result is a portfolio-ready game prop with separately art-directed open and closed states, adjustable wood and metal treatments, ageing, wear, gold and moss controls, plus a responsive arcade-style transition.

BUILD A READABLE HERO PROP
The chest begins as a simple blockout and develops through soft bevels, broad curves and strong material breaks. You will create layered wooden planks, a curved lid, metal reinforcement, leather straps, lever flaps, bolts, hinges, a central lock and pirate-themed surface detail.
Large forms carry the silhouette. Medium forms explain construction and function. Small details support the pirate theme without burying the asset in noise. The workflow uses non-destructive methods where they help and keeps the topology practical for unwrapping, export and later edits.
UVS, DECALS AND GENERATED MASKS
The UV stage covers curved, mirrored and multi-material components, including seam placement, distortion, texel density and wood-grain direction. The decorative emblems are organised as pirate decals so they add visual storytelling without forcing every motif into the base mesh.
Ambient occlusion and curvature or cavity information prepared in Blender strengthen contact, recessed detail, edge definition, ageing and wear in Unreal Engine. A custom Python mask-baking utility is included.
WHY THE COURSE USES TWO CHEST STATES
A heavily stylized chest does not always behave well under a simple lid rotation. The lock can intersect, straps can cut through the lid and flexible-looking parts can weaken the open pose.
The course solves this with a dedicated closed mesh and a separately composed open mesh. Each state can be adjusted by eye in Blender. In Unreal Engine, a short scaling animation hides a precisely timed mesh swap, preserving the intended silhouette without requiring a skeletal rig or strap physics.
PROCEDURAL MATERIALS AND BLUEPRINT INTERACTION
After GLB and FBX export, the chest is reconstructed in Unreal Engine 5.8 with reusable master materials and material instances. Generated masks, noise and Substrate blending support controls for wood colour, metal response, gold, cavities, edge definition, ageing, wear and procedural moss.
The Blueprint detects player proximity, accepts input, tracks the chest state and drives the transition with a timeline. The final asset is tested in an example Unreal Engine scene.
